Navid holds degrees in philosophy, law, and religious studies, and worked in Tehran, Iran before coming to Columbia for his PhD studies. Broadly, he is interested in the political and intellectual histories of the Persianate world. His dissertation examines new relationships between political authority and intellectual life in late Qajar and early Pahlavi Iran, with particular reference to the institutions of new primary schooling and the university.
