Matan Cohen, a PhD student in the department of Middle East, African and South Asian Studies and the Institute for Comparative Literature & Society, is a founding member of direct action group Anarchists Against the Wall, a military service refuser, and a Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaigns coordinator. His Hampshire College thesis, “A Racism of Disengagement: Israel’s Militarized Neoliberal Apartheid”, is being edited for publication. His opinions, interviews and pictures have appeared, among other places, in the Nation, the Guardian, BBC, Al-Jazeera, the New York Times, Haaretz, Al-Aharam, Al-Quds Al Arabi, the book Occupied Minds, and the films Enraged and Intifada Cult. At Columbia, he works in the fields of Middle East political-economy, comparative economic history of colonialism, the history of economic thought, political theory, psychoanalysis and critical race theory.
