Catherine Ambler is a doctoral student in MESAAS. Her research interests center on the cultural history of pre-modern Central Asia (Transoxiana) and the ways in which it situated itself within a Persianate and Islamic sphere of exchange extending through India, Iran, and Turkey. Related areas of interest include Persian literatures, Sufism, and `Alid loyalty. Her dissertation traces the ways in which sixteenth and seventeenth century tazkiras (“mementos”) of Persian poets articulate social imaginaries through their commemorations of poets, poetry, and place.
